Great Salt Lake – Antelope Island Service Project and Ranger Talk

Antelope Island State Park

This Great Salt Lake service project will be held at Antelope Island State Park on Saturday, October 21, 2023, from 9:00 AM to 11:30 AM.   Join us to learn about Antelope Islands’ contribution to Great Salt Lake hydrology and geology, while supporting our service project. We’ll start at 9 AM at the Fielding Garr Ranch with juice and donuts, and a park ranger talk on the hydrology\geology of the island in relation to the Great Salt Lake. Our service project will follow, in the form of plant removal and trash cleanup, which will last until 11:30 a.m. Physical activity will likely include digging and pulling plants, as well as picking up trash. After the project completion, all participants are invited to bring a picnic lunch to share a little more time in this beautiful place with friends and allies. Wear long pants and sturdy work shoes. Bring a shovel, work gloves, and a water bottle. If it’s a sunny day, you will definitely want a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen, as there is very little shade on the island. For Free parking, be sure to tell them you are there to support the Earth Stewardship project.  If you want to car pool, need other transportation assistance, or have any questions, contact us at slc@ldsearthstewardship.org If you have not been to Antelope Island in the fall, it is stunningly beautiful. Looking forward to seeing you there!  If you can attend, please be sure to register at https://forms.gle/LSXBBeUSfx6Y9uHV7

LDSES Book Club – Sacred Nature by Karen Armstrong

In this short but deeply powerful book, the bestselling historian of religion Karen Armstrong re-sacralizes nature for modern times. Drawing on her vast knowledge of the world’s religious traditions, she vividly describes nature’s central place in spirituality across the centuries. In bringing this age-old wisdom to life, Armstrong shows modern readers how to rediscover nature’s potency and form a connection to something greater than ourselves. ABOUT THE BOOK GROUP HOST: Tom Cain has been practicing law for 43 years, for 27 of which he taught at John F. Kennedy College of Law, a local SF Bay Area law school. From 2000 – 2017, he was the founder and Program Director for The Congress of Neutrals, a non-profit, recruiting and training mediators for the Superior Court, State of California. Tom is married to Kazume Cain, who was raised on a farm in Japan. They have two daughters, one who is also a lawyer, and the other who is his law office manager. They have been active in the Berkeley Ward for 28 years, except for three years when he served as a Bishop in Oakland. His current calling is as the Ward Sustainability Chief.
